Ypsi Coolness Suffers Another Blow

Wednesday, July 12th, 2006

An “Other Voices” column in the News proposes Ypsi as the new old Ann Arbor. “Rather than tear down the old high school, it’s been remodeled into lovely apartments for senior citizens while keeping the flavor of the stately three-story brick building intact.” Take that, you dorm-building, high-school-destroying Ann Arborites. “It may be a bit ’small town’ for the metrosexuals but, hey, the real thing isn’t for everyone.”

The latest NIMBY project (yeah, we know that a lot of you are fans of traffic “calming”) has a champion with a name almost too good to be true: Larry Greenway. Mary Greenbelt and Joe Parkthatsjusttheretostopdevelopment couldn’t be reached for comment.

The latest on the Arbor Update Broadway Village thread: local developer and big meanie Peter Allen has allegedly made a petition circulator from David Cahill’s group cry.

Monday, Complaining About the Park, I Think It Was the 3rd of July

Tuesday, July 4th, 2006

Those park-loving Ann Arborites were out in full force at last night’s city council meeting to protest the rezoning of part of Dolph Park from township to public land. While making the area a public park would at least prevent the development of dreaded condos, it would fail in the primary goal of “keeping the park area ours,” one concerned resident explained. Another pointed out that there’s a sign that marks the area as a private park. “It’s our park,” he said.

What would happen if the park became public? Well, “young people” might show up near the residents’ “private street.” One speaker raised the scenario of “other people utilizing it for things that are not nature.” “Where are these people coming from?” asked another. Where indeed?

You’ll be glad to hear that the rezoning was postponed until a meeting can be held with nearby property owners to address these and other questions.
