Best of the A2 Web
The Daily’s Best of Ann Arbor awards are out, and the “Best Overall Website” is…Google.com! Which is this really cool search engine thing, if you haven’t seen it. (Congratulations to Homeless Dave for winning the Current’s poll.)

Google is overrated.

posted by David Boyle on April 14th, 2006 at 4:58 pmIt looks as thought the voters in that poll simply opened the yellow pages. Lame.
posted by OFWinsurgent on April 14th, 2006 at 7:10 pmjs has previously explained why all such polls are lame.
Surely it would be better to recruit a large panel of highly aware students and locals to rate these things intelligently.

posted by tim on April 15th, 2006 at 6:12 amAgreed - the results of the Daily’s poll are really, really awful. Then again, it might be a result of the rather ridiculous number of categories they’ve chosen to represent.
posted by Heidi on April 15th, 2006 at 5:20 pmWell, the more categories = the more winners = the more businesses apt to buy “Named Best of ___ By The Michigan Daily” ad space.
I haven’t seen the Daily issue, but Real Detroit’s best-of was ridiculous. Especially certain categories that, as far as I know, only one establishment in SE Michigan / Ann Arbor even met the description (i.e. “Best Spanish Restaurant” - since “Best Tapas” was a category too, that alone didn’t count).

posted by Dave on April 16th, 2006 at 1:21 pmAaio, thank you. And thanks to the three people who voted in that category. Don’t get me wrong, I’m tickled that the site won. And I’ll be trying to leverage that distinction to maximum advantage in recruitment of future guests. But when a sitting City Council Member is willing to engage in a friendly wager over the content of your site … now that’s when you know you’ve arrived (cf. Rapundalo’s session).

posted by Mike on April 17th, 2006 at 2:16 pmI’ll even admit that I don’t know what the hell happened with Google as best Website. Who votes on these things?
I picked up the Starbucks as “Best Coffee” story because it seemed so out of place to me. If we opened that to the Ann Arbor public, surely they’d vote for one of the local places. (Oddly enough, I got furious e-mails from friends, who wondered how in the hell I could judge Starbucks as “best coffee.” I had to explain that I was just the writer, not the judge.)
