Debbie Schlussel, Ann Arbor-hater from America

Jill Carroll is already being characterized as a “spoiled brat America-hater from Ann Arbor” by conservative commentator Debbie Schlussel. We think Schlussel would really like A2 if she just gave the slumlords and neighborhood associations a chance.

  1. I thought spoiled brats from Ann Arbor spent their vacations on Makcinac Island, not in Baghdad?

  2. For anyone who cares, here’s a link to Schlussel’s original rant:

Seems there are several more recent ones as well.

I stopped reading most opinion journalism because it’s mostly childish drivel like this. One of my better decisions…

  3. I actually thought of AAIO when I saw that, something along the lines of, “does this make Nordlinger obsolete?” Like Ann Coulter stole Laura Ingraham’s thunder or something.

  4. When I read that kind of crap, I just have to soothe my jagged nerves by listening to this: http://toolshedmedia02.com/ts/hamell-on-trial-coulters.mp3

(sorry, don’t have time to post the deeplink correctly).

  5. Oh, the song is by a guy named Ed Hamell and it’s called “Coulter’s Snatch.”

  6. Why is Jill Carroll such a big deal conpared to the other reporters/journalists/whatever taken hostage?

Oh, right. Pretty lil white girl. Sorry, I forgot they matter more than anyone else.

  7. Debbie Schlussel was a sad, unpopular, eager-to-please conservative first-year student at the U-M’s Mary Markley Residence Hall in 1986. She also had BROWN, CURLY hair (unlike the blonde, straight locks shown on her website now) and displayed a school-girl crush on Jack Kemp.

Let’s take whatever she says with a giant grain of salt. I for one am glad that one human person - brown, white, christian, jewish, whatever categories to which Jill Carroll subscribes - survived a nightmare ordeal.

  8. I believe an equally big deal was made about all the other Ann Arbor natives taken hostage while reporting in Iraq, whether pretty, ugly, lil, big, white, black, brown, yellow, green, blue, girl, boy, or fucktard. (That last one is for you, BJ: should you ever be taken hostage while reporting in Iraq, we are here for you, even though you are one fucking creep.)

  9. I believe that tropico 2 is on the mark. I showed Ms. S’s blog entry to a bunch of late ’80s UM types, and at least two of them had crossed paths with her. What they recalled tallied nicely with 2’s entry. Debbie is proof that some people will do anything for $. She would like to be Ann Coulter.

  10. Oh, right. Pretty lil white girl. Sorry, I forgot they matter more than anyone else.

Uh, yeah, I guess that’s why no one’s ever heard of Daniel Pearl.

  11. I wonder how she would respond in that situation? It’s all well and good for someone to complain about someone else’s actions when safely behind a keyboard, but I would imagine this Debbie would be balling her eyes out if she were in that situation.

And at least she seems grateful to be back here, unlike those folks the British rescued.

  12. aaio: OK fine, there’s one. Honestly, how many faceless reporters do you hear getting kidnapped over there? Dozens upon dozens. Don’t act like what I said isn’t true, you know it is.

  13. Reporters Without Borders says that 38 journalists have been kidnapped in Iraq. Three of them are American, the ones you would expect to hear most about, since we live in the US. The two besides Jill Carroll worked for Four Corners Media and World Picture News, neither of which I’ve heard of. Carroll worked for a very prominent newspaper.

I try not to get too political here, but I believe that the “pretty white girls” meme is sexist and not always supported by the facts. And even when it is, for every Laci Peterson, there’s a Pamela Smart or Pamela Turner getting airtime for their crimes.

  14. Not getting political? Way, way too late.

Sexist? You’ve GOT to be kidding me…

  15. Schlussel thinks Rick Convertino is an American hero. Goes to show ya.

  16. Did Debbie Schlusell get laid while she was at Mary Markley?

  17. I’m certainly willing to reciprocate the loathing Debbie Schlussel undoubtedly would have for me, if she knew me.

But bringing up what a pathetic sad sack she was in college seems a little unfair.

If I were to make some kind of edgy political statement (I dunno, someday I might want to do that), I don’t think it would be a fair rebuttal to bring up how ludicrously underdeveloped my social skills were when I was 20.

  18. Good call Larry.

Unnecessary insult, like scapegoating, can be bad…

  19. Debbie’s best moment from her days living on 2nd Little at Mary Markley was her appearance on the “Mort Downey” show filmed in Detroit. She was going off on some rant about Palestinian terrorists and Mort blew smoke in her face and said “Menachem Begin is a terrorist!”, which threw Debbie off. She started to babble and then Mort cut her off and went to some down-river type guy who said “I think all the Jews and the Ay-rabs should just all get along!”, which Mort thought was brilliant.

We had it on tape and used to tease her about it regularly!

  20. I notice that last month someone pled guilty in U.S District Court in Detroit for sending threatening e-mails to Schlussel. This is the third such federal indictment against a person - all Moslem - for making threats against Schlussel.

  21. Debbie Schlussel called Barnett Jones, Ann Arbor Chief of Police a “friend”and has made shockingly abusive and outrageous comments regarding respected Dearborn Heights District Court Judge David Turfe (who is Lebanese Moslem) as well as Judge William Hultgren of Dearborn. This conduct is an abhorrence to all who promote peace and goodwill among Jews and Moslems.
