Landlords Discover the Blogosphere
Students claim that they’re being pressured by their landlords to remove unflattering Internet postings (like an entire anti-CMB Facebook group.) Check out the original LiveJournal post that inspired all this while it’s still more or less intact (although it’s nowhere near as good as this.)
Good God, I followed that Brooklyn thread for the last 45 minutes. Hilarious.
posted by OFWinsurgent on February 10th, 2006 at 1:45 pmMuch-deserved shout out to The State on the Brooklyn blog. Such a classic.
posted by Dale on February 10th, 2006 at 3:49 pmNo PMS(i) mention on the LiveJournal thread? Crazy.
posted by James on February 10th, 2006 at 4:31 pmThat Brooklyn thread is outrageous.
posted by Daniel Adams on February 10th, 2006 at 5:42 pmI guess the lesson is, if you move to Brooklyn, don’t rent from Tremblicky. Good to know.

posted by Real Big on February 12th, 2006 at 2:01 pmI too was surprised by the lack of hate towards PMSI as they are the worst landlords in the history of rental housing.
posted by rp on February 12th, 2006 at 2:15 pmWell, of course I find this stuff long after I sign a lease for next year. Happily, looking at that LJ thread, it looks like my future landlords are in the “tolerable-good” range.
Can’t be any worse than the University itself, anyhow. Cockroaches in the bathrooms? Oy.
posted by Boston Fan in Michigan on February 13th, 2006 at 2:39 pmBased on the actual link, one landlord asked one student to remove one post. The CMB Facebook group incident is said to have happened to one of the poster’s “buddies.” No details are given.
Not as exciting or substantial as the entry implies.
posted by Anonymous on February 13th, 2006 at 4:48 pmExercise your rights, know the Landlord/Tennant Laws, read your lease before you sign it, if your parents pay your rent I couldn’t care less what predicament you’re in, otherwise I understand the pain slumlords can cause. I’ve only had to sue one but it helped open my eyes and I’ve never put myself into that situation again. Remeber, a slumlord will try to use a lease to try to get you to agree to things that are against the law and you or they can nullify a part of the lease while keeping the rest intact (standard clause in most leases). The best defense is go to the library, I hear there’s a pretty good law library at the university, and do some digging. you will be surprised at what you can find.
posted by Andrew on February 14th, 2006 at 12:07 amMcKinley properties with all their starry eyed buying is in some big trouble. They have gone in over their head and manangers are leaving the sites so fast the paper work for exiting tenants cannot be processed proprerly. This is the cause of the suit we are just waiting to file. They not only withheld money from the deposit for rent we did not owe they had the chutzpah to charge a late fee on it. We even went to the corp headquarters with plenty of proof that we did not owe the money allowed them to cop ythe paperwork and the check they wrote us was still for the wrong amount. It is going to be funny to watch them sink them selves in the coming months from their own greed. My vote for worst landlord is of course Mckinley.
