Time for a Mattress Ban?
The Daily reports that an apartment building fire that started about four hours after an earlier, apparently less severe, fire had been put out was caused by “smoldering debris — including a highly flammable mattress — that firefighters had thrown out the window after the first fire” and left near the building. The News leaves out this bit of information.
Oh boy. Incoming matress fire laws.

And it’s never, ever, ever faulty wiring or lack of decent inspections. Bedding and furniture related products spontaneously combust when you place them out-of-doors.
(To give the Daily yet another minature high-five, there’s a letter to the editor today about the ridiculousness of concentrating on couches and ignoring shoddy landlords.)

posted by Boston Fan in Michigan on December 6th, 2005 at 11:37 pmSpeaking of mattresses, several absentee landlords in the student area of town have a problem throwing old ones away when tenants move out. Seems that their slim profit margins cause the affordability of hauling them away to exceed their means. So these landlords simply store dozens of them in their basements for years, stacked to the ceiling. Of course, with the City cutting back on their staff of inspectors, few are assessed fines and tenants are exposed to additional fire hazard. By the way, are those one-hour fire doors kept closed per code? I doubt it.
posted by Skyhawk on December 7th, 2005 at 10:36 pmYep it’s time for a little economics. If the landlord must now factor in the cost to remove left over furniture then we must put a cost on this service. The students will not wish to bare the burden of the increase but they will have to. Seems a thoughtful person would not leave behind the furniture but then who would be so thoughtful. As for those fire doors. I’m sure the landlords who have had to install them go around proping them open. Give me a break.
