Leopold’s Meeting
We just want to thank Mayor Hieftje for appearing at Leopold Bros. last night to meet with the local blog types (announced here). And for having a great sense of humor about the “best-tasting water” award mockery.
We just want to thank Mayor Hieftje for appearing at Leopold Bros. last night to meet with the local blog types (announced here). And for having a great sense of humor about the “best-tasting water” award mockery.
A couple questions:
1.) How does the Mayor pronounce his name?
2.) What was actually said?
posted by A Different Jon on December 3rd, 2005 at 4:03 pmI really enjoyed the evening and the discussion. Thank you!
If you really want to know, it is - Hief-t-ya, the -t-is small but there.

For the benefit of those who weren’t there, could some of the attendees report on what was said last night? Or post a link if you are reporting on your own blog? (Chance to scoop the News and Daily.)
Likewise, if the non-attending conspiracy theorists have something to add….
posted by A Different Jon on December 3rd, 2005 at 9:10 pmOn a related note … I just noticed in the Chicago Reader that Hillary Clinton is scheduled to be speaking at this very minute at Crobar ($50 admission). Strangely enough, I haven’t been to Crobar, yet. I do have a couple related stories.
I was eating a very late night snack at the Hollywood Diner. While chatting with the lady next to me at the counter, I asked her, “What do you do in Chicago?” She replied, “I spank people for a living at Crobar.”
A bartender buddy of mine was sharing an apartment with a dominatrix, Mistress Something-or-Other. Mistress was part of a fetish extravangaza at Crobar. She sub-contracted my bartender buddy to sit around and have her toes sucked. My buddy says she made good money that night.
Will the Republicans use Hillary’s appearance at Crobar against her? Were there spankings at Lepold Brothers last night?

I cannot confirm or deny any such rumors that you may have spread.
What, you want a transcript? It was fun. See you next time.

Usually if a pigeon shits in the middle of Main Street this blog will have a surveyor saying it’s technically not in the middle, someone will criticize the News’ coverage of it, and a preservationist will want to build a dome over it.
A thread or so ago people were taking the Mayor to task about something he may or may not have said in a class they may or may not have sat in on. Yet when the guy sits down with you, all that is said is “It was fun.”
Per other items — if you get a second date after “It was fun.”, I’ll still be in Chicago. If you want me to type out the section two page one blurb from the reader, I’ll do it later.
posted by A Different Jon on December 4th, 2005 at 1:40 amWell, we talked about affordable housing for most of the meeting, and then some about alternative energy. The discussion was mostly constructive and high-minded. Anyhow, I felt that my normal instinct, writing down things to mock or overanalyze them later, would have violated the spirit of the whole thing.
If I had any complaint, it was that the discussion on affordable housing focused mostly on how public funds should be allocated, when I think that the emphasis should be on how we can stop actively thwarting solutions that don’t cost the city any money (taller buildings, ADUs) simply because the neighborhoods oppose them.
