A (Mismatched Verb) Tense Exchange
Our FAQ proves to be very informative to our readers once again:
well haha after sending you a msg about leaving a2, i read the FAQ and now understand you are in grad school. well there may not be a fucking grad school if a2 wasnt the way it is… hey retard, transfer out west or something, you are a bitch and doesnt deserve u of m. ass
What was the time stamp on that one? Must have been after the bars closed. Don’t you love hate mail?
U of M ass, now that’s a hot commodity.
posted by OFWinsurgent on November 16th, 2005 at 3:14 pmI’d hope that letter is not a reflection of the quality of education at U of M. If it is, I’d demand a refund.
posted by Kozzie on November 16th, 2005 at 3:45 pmI don’t think he meant “U of M ass”. The period after “m” is the one bit of decent punctuation in the email. It separates the end of the final sentence from the signature.

posted by OFWinsurgent on November 17th, 2005 at 12:02 amI asked my AA-attending best friend if he’d ever heard it called that; apparently it’s a new trend among this year’s freshmen.
posted by Big John on November 17th, 2005 at 12:17 amI still don’t know what the deuce the deuce is.
posted by tom on November 17th, 2005 at 8:34 amI knew a guy nicknamed deuce once. It was a reference to his fondness for licking assholes. I don’t know if this is relevant.

I knew a pretentious asshole once who had a child he named after himself, but referred to said infant as “The Deuce.”
ick.
posted by OFWinsurgent on November 17th, 2005 at 11:15 amAfter work I’m gonna grab me a double-deuce of Rolling Rock.
posted by Holy Toledoan on November 17th, 2005 at 11:49 amPosts like this remind me that, no matter how much the climate, boredom, or overwork of life in Ann Arbor get me down, I can take comfort in the fact that my town is full of such friendly and sophisticated people.
posted by Nick on November 17th, 2005 at 11:57 amIf you grew up in the Detroit area, “the Deuce” referred to Henry Ford II. But I don’t know if he was sophisticated or casual.
posted by Dave on November 17th, 2005 at 12:26 pmIn some parts of Detroit a deuce-and-a-quarter referred to a Buick Electra 225.
posted by tom on November 17th, 2005 at 12:44 pmHeh. I was going to comment on Ann Arbor Is Underrated’s mention that no one at the Shaman party was under 30, when I know under-30s who attended… but this is so much better.
PS - It’s much easier for me to discredit your opinion when you type like shit.
On an off note, AAiO, Pixies - U-Mass is a much better song than The Get Up Kids - Anne Arbour. And by “much”, I mean “infinitely”.
posted by Jen on November 17th, 2005 at 2:09 pmDave, when and where exactly in Detroit? In grew up in the suburbs, granted, but the whole family’s in the auto industry and I never heard that term for HFII. I like it, though.
posted by Jen on November 17th, 2005 at 2:11 pmWasn’t Mussolini called The Duece?
(Now before you all slam me, I know he was called Il Duce….)
I guess A-Squared is too complicated for the kids of today.
“what’s a square anyway?”
posted by Kozzie on November 17th, 2005 at 2:37 pmJen, is there a site called annarborisunderrated? I haven’t seen that one.
posted by OFWinsurgent on November 17th, 2005 at 2:46 pmI think Jen is referring to the column in the Daily by that name.
posted by Holy Toledoan on November 17th, 2005 at 3:07 pmJen,
posted by tom on November 17th, 2005 at 3:14 pmReferring to HFII as Hank the Deuce was common where I grew up (Allen Park).
Jen,
Tom apparently beat me to it — I, too, am from the Park of Allen. I think the obits in the News and Free Press referred to him as the Deuce as well, so I’m pretty sure it wasn’t just some downriver thing.
posted by Dave on November 17th, 2005 at 3:25 pmMussolini was Il Duce, pronounced ill doo-chay. Henry was always Hank the Deuce in Ann Arbor in the 60’s. Acey Deucey is backgammon in WWII-speak.
posted by Michael McC. on November 17th, 2005 at 3:52 pmDetroit media frequently called Henry Ford II “Hank the Deuce” in the 1970s. I never heard of him as just “Deuce”.
posted by Larry Kestenbaum on November 17th, 2005 at 4:39 pmNote, too, that Hank the Deuce was the original Henry Ford’s grandson, not son, hence II instead of Jr.
posted by Larry Kestenbaum on November 17th, 2005 at 4:41 pmAs contrasted with current Ford chairman, who is a Jr and referred to as Junior (except to his face).
posted by tom on November 17th, 2005 at 4:56 pm“The deuce”?!! LOL!

It’s a column in the Daily on Thursdays. Maybe alternating thursdays. Brilliant name, eh?
posted by Jen on November 17th, 2005 at 7:00 pmAnd yes, I know that Il Duce is not pronounced the same as The Deuce…Sheesh….
The Deuce though…Sounds like a burger of some sort….Yeah, give me the Deuce. and the AED….
posted by Kozzie on November 17th, 2005 at 8:16 pmafter Dave’s comment about dropping a deuce, I don’t think I would ever order any food that had the name”deuce” in it. ugh.
posted by OFWinsurgent on November 17th, 2005 at 8:56 pmmy kids referred to ann arbor as the deuce when they were in high school and all edgy and shit but they got over it.

posted by Anonymous on November 18th, 2005 at 8:59 amI thought “the deuce” was ESPN 2.
posted by Mike on November 18th, 2005 at 12:01 pmThe use and legitimacy of ‘The Deuce’ in reference to Ann Arbor has been hotly debated on Ann Arbor’s Wikipedia page, at one point appearing and disappearing repeatedly from the opening of the article. It does currently appear in the Terminology section of the article. Perhaps we need a Arborwiki page about the phenomenon.

I also like listening to A-C-Duece-E.
