Launch of the Winling Campaign
Dale of the New West Side Association is launching his campaign as a write-in for City Council in the 5th Ward. While it would be funny if someone wrote in a vote for Wendy Woods’ acknowledged opponent, apathy, we’re planning to vote for Dale Tuesday. If you live in the 5th Ward and also want to do so, write in “LaDale C. Winling.”
Oh, and if you live in the 1st Ward, Bob Johnson is running against ennui and malaise.
I’m betting Johnson will win his race - ennui and malaise are setting themselves up for failure by splitting the vote that way. Couldn’t they have worked that out in a primary?
posted by Murph on November 5th, 2005 at 2:23 pmCongrats to Dale for outing himself! I’m impressed he’s joining the political process.
posted by Dave Cahill on November 5th, 2005 at 2:27 pmDave, I was never “in.” Check out my platform here.
posted by Dale on November 5th, 2005 at 2:51 pmDale, you’ve got some text-formatting issues.
posted by Brandon on November 5th, 2005 at 3:58 pmMurph - there was some confusion because ennui lives in a 3rd Ward fraternity for a lot of the year.
posted by ann arbor is overrated on November 5th, 2005 at 4:20 pmDon’t worry — I’m sure ennui will be named to the new downtown/doldrums advisory committee.
posted by Dale on November 5th, 2005 at 11:15 pmIt’s nice to see that Dale appears to have grown up at least a little bit from his days as an MSA candidate.

Seriously, I feel bad for the out of context reference.

posted by Dale on November 6th, 2005 at 9:13 pmHey man, thank god there wasn’t internet when I was in school. What a fucking nightmare to have that dredged up. “HHofNH” would have a field day googling up all those skeletons

posted by OFWinsurgent on November 6th, 2005 at 11:34 pmHi, OFWi –
Just curious — I saw your first name when you were arguing with Anna. I know two Ann Arbor women with that name who I could see posting as you do. Would you be:
* Blonde, whiskey/cigarette voice, spent time in SF?
* Brunette, buddies with Docious?
posted by A Different Jon on November 7th, 2005 at 6:34 amActually, I know a certain shrewish n. division resident quite well.
posted by Anna on November 7th, 2005 at 7:59 am…excuse me while I sidestep yet another badly-thrown rutabega from New Haven.
To answer your questioin ADJ, brunette, but I don’t know Docious.

What’s the population of Hartford? It’s such a toy city. The “big” buidings aren’t that big and there’s a river going down the middle of it. In the next 50 years, could Ann Arbor grow to a mini Hartford?
posted by A Different Jon on November 7th, 2005 at 8:31 amOkay OFWi, you’re not in the Paybacks.
posted by A Different Jon on November 7th, 2005 at 8:35 amNo, I know Wendy Case though. We went to a Sonic Youth Show many years ago and rushed the stage.
posted by OFWinsurgent on November 7th, 2005 at 8:38 amCompeting with hipsters 20 years younger for street cred, how cute. Keep ‘em coming, Shrew of North Division.

Anna —
depending on your estimation of absolute vs. relative ages, you could be getting a free CD out of this.
How about some stats on Hartford?
posted by A Different Jon on November 7th, 2005 at 9:59 amThis is starting to be like the y2karl/dhoyt flameout on Metafilter. Without the political context.
posted by ann arbor is overrated on November 7th, 2005 at 10:02 amWell, just to clear one thing up…I do not know Anna and she does not know me. As far as I know, we have never laid eyes on one another. I assume she is an OK person, smart, likes animals. I just think her posts are humorless, sancitmonious and negative and have said so. BFD.
posted by OFWinsurgent on November 7th, 2005 at 10:19 amI’d vote for Dale, but only if he kept his old platform.
posted by Dave on November 7th, 2005 at 10:49 amAAIO: Dhoyt hates Matteo, y2karl hates Dhoyt, Davy hates Scarabic, Rothko hates Dios… I’m sure that I’m missing some, but a real man would say “Electrocute me until I tell the truth.”

Jon, I don’t know much more about Hartford than anyone else here, but the internet says that the population is around 125,000.
And for the record, Wendy and I do know each other, we were neighbors for a time, she just doesn’t realize it. My armchair assessment, as long as we are giving them, is that she has a tendency toward borderline personality disorder.
posted by Anna on November 7th, 2005 at 11:04 amThanks for your armchair diagnosis. Sorry, I don’t remember you.
posted by OFWinsurgent on November 7th, 2005 at 11:19 amI post to MeFi occasionally, but mostly I just read. Metatalk is so much fun. It was great when y2karl pretended to have received e-mails from dhoyt to draw out whether he had any “sock puppet” accounts. I didn’t really understand the whole thing, though.
I, on the other hand, am very up front about the fact that “Anna” and “OFWInsurgent” are my sock puppet accounts.
posted by ann arbor is overrated on November 7th, 2005 at 11:33 amWe thought Boris was a better foil for us, when are you bringing him back?
posted by Anna on November 7th, 2005 at 11:42 amOh, Dale… if only I could actually vote for you…
posted by Lazaro on November 7th, 2005 at 3:34 pmAAIO: The weirdest part was that DHoyt WAS using those as sockpuppets. How bizarre! (So, what should I be searching for to figure out your name there?)
posted by js on November 8th, 2005 at 8:49 amWhich one of you was the joker that suggested Ann Arbor as a substitute for Montreal in one of the AskMe threads?

posted by Anna on November 8th, 2005 at 8:41 pmWhat are the Ann Arbor results? Who is Mayor of Detroit?
posted by A Different Jon on November 9th, 2005 at 3:54 amWard 1 - Johnson
Ward 2 - Rapundalo
Ward 3 - Greden
Ward 4 - Higgins
Ward 5 - Woods
Ash Tree removal millage failed.
Kilpatrick relected. Jackie Currie still city clerk of Detroit. I would be shocked at either of those, but I pretty much expected that from the start.

posted by A Different Jon on November 9th, 2005 at 8:38 amHNG, Jackie Currie lost.
posted by tom on November 9th, 2005 at 10:37 amHow many votes did Dale get?
posted by Brandon on November 9th, 2005 at 10:53 amThere were 116 write-ins in the 5th ward, 5.5% of the vote. I don’t know how to tell whom they were for. Maybe I’ll call the city clerk.
posted by Dale on November 9th, 2005 at 10:59 amInterestingly, there were even more write-ins in the First Ward, at least as a percentage: 71 write-ins for 7.19%. No indication of how many of those were for Josh.
posted by Parking Structure Dude! on November 9th, 2005 at 12:05 pmThanks Tom. My mistake, I got my sources all crossed up. Guess that’s why I’m not a journalist.
The queen is dead.
posted by HNG on November 9th, 2005 at 12:15 pmWow! if there were 116, and that was 5.5% of just the 5th ward, that is an excellent turnout for a non-presidential year. Was the turn-out equally impressive in the other wards?
posted by Anna on November 9th, 2005 at 1:47 pmNo. Down from 21,000 in 2003 to 12,000 this year.
posted by Dale on November 9th, 2005 at 1:59 pmAnn Arbor has decided to canvass its own election returns, so I won’t know about totals for specific write-in candidates for at least several more days.
posted by Larry Kestenbaum on November 9th, 2005 at 3:29 pmAlso: Dale Winling’s total will be reported in the Statement of Votes. If you want to know about the 1st ward, or about any other non-registered write-in, you probably need to attend the canvass at city hall. Call the city clerk’s office for details.
