Praising With Faint Damning

“Annarborisoverrated.com continues to ride its snarky one-trick pony to hilarity,” writes the Daily’s Zack Denfeld. We’ll take that as a compliment of sorts…

  1. Don’t.

  2. Two mentions in the Daily in one week? You’re on your way to the top of the fame ladder.

  3. Google News had a top-shelf link from another story that quoted the Daily on the Google book scanning/copyright infringment thing. That was mildly frightening, more so that any other writer would quote the Daily in sincerity about anything than it being a top link in the News section.

They did drop Arbor Update and the New West Side Association a few issues back though. In a halfway decent article about voting. Still, in the same issue they had a sex column about how guys and girls can’t be friends. At some point, I need to remember to bring my own reading material to class.

  4. The Ann Arbor Paper also ran a sex column about how guys and girls can’t be friends. It’s enough to make me miss “Sex and the Diag” and the “Michigan hookup” columnist.

  5. Um, hilarity? What? Did he even read the site?

  6. I DO miss the “Sex and the Diag” columnist… I should really get back into my habit of getting the Daily from Strickland’s.

  7. Zack’s the guy who was handing out soup on a street corner as art and inviting City Council members out on walking tours of Ann Arbor’s stencils…

  8. they’re kids, people. kids.

  9. better one trick than none.

  10. Aw, how can you say that when students were responsible for the much beloved and sorely missed “Great Eats in the Ann Arbor Streets.” Marisa — I heard there’s going to be an H.P. Pickleshit’s opening any day now!!!

  11. I wouldn’t take a compliment from someone who thinks the Michigan Daily is one of the best college papers in the country.

  12. Guys and girls can’t be friends? I beg to differ, since every woman I meet tells me she just wants to be friends. ‘Course, then I never hear from them again, so…

  13. “Annarborisoverrated.com continues to ride its snarky one-trick pony to hilarity,”-

Intended as a compliment. of sorts.

“I wouldn’t take a compliment from someone who thinks the Michigan Daily is one of the best college papers in the country.” HNG

Don’t get me wrong, the Michigan Daily is horrible, but so are most of the collge papers I have seen. I actually thought the Daily Orange at Syracuse University was a slightly better newspaper when I worked there, but only because they had a full page of student comics everyday which often bordered on insane.

The major point of the article is that local blogs put out much better content than newspapers in general, and college newspapers in particulalr, but I hate reading off a screen.

I can’t wait for the day when newspapers are a compilation of the best regional blog content.

  14. The daily paper is one of those things that MSU does so much better than UM.

  15. Blogs seem better than daily papers to some people because they’re more progressive and hip and anti-establishment and all of that. I’d like to see a blogger put out a 20-page newspaper every day that accurately covers campus and the world without a liberal slant. Until then, newspapers will just have to put up with bloggers’ snide comments about front-page misspellings that they use as evidence to discredit a true news source.
