House Fire Critically Injures Student
Another student rental house fire, this time critically injuring a tenant. The News reports that one of the students needed to be alerted of the blaze via cell phone because the smoke detectors didn’t go off on time.
Also, the Daily’s Ann Arbor is Underrated column debuts, in what’s possibly the closest thing to a mention that we’ve received in that publication.
Some pictures here.

posted by Anna on September 22nd, 2005 at 12:37 pmHoly crap. Everyone ought to check their houses or apartments TODAY to make sure bedroom windows are operable and smoke detectors are working.

posted by Dale on September 22nd, 2005 at 2:07 pmAhem… Dale… er… remember taking out the smoke detector batteries so our kitchen cooking doesn’t set them off? Ahem.
posted by Brandon on September 22nd, 2005 at 3:53 pmGood call, Brandon. Thanks for volunteering to do this check and replace batteries if needed.
posted by Dale on September 22nd, 2005 at 4:16 pmHee, hee! As a couple of you know, I cook at my house quite a bit, and every time I cook anything in the oven for over twenty minutes, the smoke detector goes off. I SHOULD probably check to make sure I put the batteries back in. The windows work fine, thankfully.
Saw this story on the TV news early this morning, and immediately had much the same thought as Anna.
posted by Lazaro on September 22nd, 2005 at 4:22 pmToo bad the renters in your 9/19 post already have a house. They could really cut their teeth on this rebuilding project.
posted by Anna on September 22nd, 2005 at 6:24 pmCongrats on being emulated in the Daily. If that dude’s picture doesn’t scream “Joe Sixpack,” I don’t know what does.
posted by Dave on September 22nd, 2005 at 8:12 pmI must say, I have to give props to Madison. We had about 7 smoke detectors in a 4 bedroom house, and 2 fire extinguishers refilled the month before we moved in. ‘Course, the alarms went off all the damn time, so when something on the stove did catch on fire we all ignored it. Seems to be a common occurence, eh.
ISSA, on the other hand… I’m quite surprised the house didn’t collapse upon itself, nevermind a fire.
I had a friend in the “house burning down” incident from last year… sigh. Fucking landlords. Not letting the inspectors off either. It’s nice that they give the landlords enough notice where my friend could be moved out of his illegal basement bedroom for a few days, then moved back in after they were done. Gotta appreciate.

Blaze may have started near couch, officials say
Several property damage reports taken in the neighborhood an hour before the fire

posted by OFWinsurgent on September 23rd, 2005 at 10:54 pmYeah. On the couch. While they were all fucking asleep. It wasn’t faulty wiring or anything the landlord should’ve taken care of, no, it’s the damn fucking couch.
That said, I’m actuall proud of the mayor for his response to this one (tear):
“This was a very serious incident, but someone would have to prove the couches on a porch are more likely to burn than couches in a living room”
