Elitism Full-Strength
Elitism Week on AAIO continues (and can we just reminisce for a bit and say that Goodspeed’s characterization of U of M secret societies like Michigamua as “elitism lite” was one of the funniest things we’ve ever seen on an Ann Arbor blog?) Here we have a Craigslist posting from an A2 “proffesor” in “the creative genres of education” looking to meet “beautifull young women.”
Why do I not believe this person is a professor?
posted by peter on March 17th, 2005 at 2:21 pmCome on, prufessers need luv too.
posted by Anna on March 17th, 2005 at 2:27 pmGiven my proffesorial asperations, I figured that I would place my own personal ad on craig’s list.
But don’t mock that guy - English might not be his first language, and we don’t want to upset the undergrads from the drinking thread too much.
posted by DrMandrake on March 17th, 2005 at 2:49 pmAt least he ran spell check on the headline.
posted by OFWinsurgent on March 17th, 2005 at 2:55 pmOr, we could do something about this.
posted by Brandon on March 17th, 2005 at 3:16 pmIn the end, Brandon, does it really matter whether they put up buildings or parks through the city? Ann Arbor will still suck either way. Unless they move Ann Arbor into Central Park in NYC, who cares whether there is some goddamn greenway or another 7 level parking structure in this town? I’d email the city council and the mayor but I doubt they’re intelligent enough to be able to read.
posted by DrMandrake on March 17th, 2005 at 4:57 pmAnybody want to join Friends of the Parking Lot? As FOPL members we could all attend the next city council meeting with matchbox cars pinned to our chests. We could bring photographic “evidence” of under utilized parks in the city… I hear there are times when you can actually walk in and not have to wait for a tee time at Huron Hills!
Easthope works out at my gym. I wanted to ask him if it was harder to bench press with his head stuck up the ass of the OWS.
posted by KBlow on March 17th, 2005 at 6:34 pmA photo survey of underutilized parks would be hillarious. And true.
posted by Anonymous on March 17th, 2005 at 9:15 pmMandrake, can I answer your ad if I get the feeling semiannually that Ann Arbor is tolerable?
posted by beautifull young woman on March 18th, 2005 at 12:52 amYou can answer my ad anytime. I think Ann Arbor’s tolerable sometimes too, but usually that happens when I’m drunk. It’s Saint Patrick’s day, and I’ve had enough Irish car bombs to even believe that Ann Arbor is a great town.
posted by DrMandrake on March 18th, 2005 at 1:59 amI second the call for matchbox cars pinned to chests, if only because it amuses me.
The main “park” I utilize in this town is the swingset in front of Community… because swingsets rule. Beyond and above that, well, lots of town-ranking surveys take into account park space per square mile, so we gotta work that angle, I suppose.
Not to say I’m against parks in town. Parks are well and good, especially if they have swingsets.
Ann Arbor is tolerable, yes. Although many things are tolerable. Would I stay here after graduation? Well… depends on if I get offered a job here, a. And b., I do appreciate all the free cultural events I hit up for both the content of the lecture and the mini-quiches afterwards (if in the League, usually). But any large city can provide the same thing at just a fraction of the cost, and with greater variety. So…. tolerable, but not going to stay here unless it would be financially stupid for me not to, I guess. Considering how badly this town is wearing on me after only 3.5 years, I cringe to think of what it could do to me if I stayed longer than, say, 10.
posted by Jen on March 18th, 2005 at 3:38 amSwingsets do indeed rule. But lone adults swinging on them tend to creep folks out so I haven’t indulged lately. Midnight swinging is the best.
posted by Dave on March 18th, 2005 at 11:23 amJen, i used to live on Catherine–i love that swingset!
I like that the ‘professor’ in the ad classifies himself as “stocky” and then goes on to clarify that with “construction worker build.” trying to work in multiple fantasies here, dude?
posted by Anonymous on March 18th, 2005 at 2:41 pmI used to live next door to that swingset, and sat on my side porch listening to folks on acid amuse themselves most nights during the summer.
posted by OFWinsurgent on March 18th, 2005 at 3:59 pmHeh. The AAiO photosurvey of under-utilized parks. A bunch of pictures of people drinking out of brown-paper bags or passed out on park benches?
posted by Murph on March 18th, 2005 at 4:09 pmUnderutilized parks? Have you ever seen Gallup once it starts getting nice out? Almost impossible to park there.
posted by kozzie on March 19th, 2005 at 5:23 amSure it’s crowded… all the parasitic assholes from the surrounding townships (who have low taxes b/c they won’t pay for their own damn parks) plus all the assholes from the OWS who are too scared to use West Park. Maybe the Greenway weenies will demand a parking stucture for Gallup, that’d be a hoot.
posted by KBlow on March 19th, 2005 at 9:44 amKozzie- Then ride your bike. I never have any trouble locking mine up once I’m there.
posted by js on March 19th, 2005 at 12:37 pmWait - people actually come to Ann Arbor to enjoy themselves? Not only because they are stuck here for school or work? Absolutely amazing. Are these people nuts?
I agree with JS. Walk or bike.
posted by Dr.Mandrake on March 19th, 2005 at 1:05 pmElitism lite, eh? Poor Goodspeed really needs to let go of Ann Arbor…
