Senior Moments
The AP runs a story about retirees moving back to college towns like A2. One development has condos that go for $250,000 to $750,000, part of the appeal being two performances a week by students and professors from the music school at that university that never contributes anything to the town and drives down property values.
Also, yes, that is a Mr. Stadium shirt on Kevin Costner (thanks, Rob.)
According to the city council’s and mayor’s current conflation of density and affordability, $250,000-$750,000 is probably in the affordable range.

Apparently, Bill Kinley doesn’t read this website.

posted by Anonymous on March 16th, 2005 at 2:44 pmthose mr stadium t’s used to be only $2 (no joke) about 10-12 years ago. Now the ironic hipsters and apparetnly Kevin Costner have driven the price up.
posted by Bez on March 16th, 2005 at 3:49 pmI dig Mr. Stadium. Once washed my tent there (it got moldy from my month-long stint of camping on the Huron in Michigan summer humidity…)
posted by meg on March 16th, 2005 at 3:54 pmI’ve got my issues with A2, but one of the nice things about the town *is* the connection to the University. There’s a lot of great guests, musicians, etc that come through — a lot of opportunities to see obscure, world-class events. Hell, even just stopping in at the Musical Theatre department’s productions is well worth whatever they’re charging these days. Every bit as good as a touring production for 3-8 times the cost.
I sure wouldn’t spend a ton of money to live in town. But living less than a half hour away and working in town, I like being able to take advantage of what the University offers from time to time.

posted by cats on March 16th, 2005 at 8:56 pmEvan, I so agree. Most of the events I can afford in this town (mainly because they’re free) are put on by the University. This week alone, two movies, “Daughter of Shanghai” at the Nat. Sci. Auditorium today at 4, “Detroit, Ruin of a City” tomorrow in Rackham at 8:30, that promise to be very thought-provoking, not to mention Lou Goldberg’s ongoing Cinema Guild series in the basement of the Modern Languages Building every Sunday afternoon at 1, as well as great musical performances (the U-M Orchestra’ll be playing “Scheherezade” this Tuesday and I’m definitely looking forward to the Javanese gamelan performance of the “Mahabharata” this Easter). It sucks to be poor in this town, but less so if one pays attention to what’s going on around campus.
posted by Lazaro on March 17th, 2005 at 9:15 amI have to agree. I went to a free Rachel’s concert at the Art Museum last Tuesday. And today I’m planning on going to “Detroit, Ruin of a City” at Rackham — also free.
Hmmm… Ann Arbor without the University. Let’s see. Pfizer wouldn’t be here, b/c it was attracted by the University. In fact, most industry and business wouldn’t have set up shop here, b/c most were attracted by the presence and business that UM generated.
UM has been here for well over 150 years. It’s hard to think about A2 w/o UM then.
Ever been to Adrian, MI? It’s a sort of depressed, boring town in southwestern Michigan. I’m pretty sure that’s what A2 would be like, if not for UM.
Listen, I’m surely done with A2. But to say that A2 would be better off without UM is absurd — plain and simple.
