Cryptic
On “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” vampires and demons usually take the night off on Halloween. It’s too obvious, almost de rigueur. It’s the day when everyone’s dressed as something scary.
Well, think of Art Fair as Halloween for Ann Arbor haters. Art Fair is the time of year when everyone becomes an honorary Tree Town critic. But the true A2-hater, one who’s been honing the craft for years, wants to hear screams of horror, not, “And what’s this, a ‘Talk About Town’-mocking dragon? Oooh, scary! Do you want Twizzlers or a Milky Way?” We actually don’t mind Art Fair that much, as long as we don’t leave our crypt.
if you have to leave your crypt make sure you bring along art fair bingo http://osric.com/bingo/

Be on the look-out for doll heads. And I’m planning on going down with a chair and offering “free face massages” to out of towners just to mess with them…

I got a face massage a couple years ago at the Art Free. I paid $10. Can you post where your chair will be located this year?
posted by Eric on July 21st, 2004 at 1:49 pmJS, we have about 20 of the creepy dolls in our grounds crew’s tool shed as I speak. It’s been a bumper-crop. Photos may be forthcoming soon.
Art Fair bingo is almost too easy when your entire task for the day is to walk around the edge of campus and empty trash cans among the throngs. We’re all doing well so far, but we couldn’t decide if a flutin’ Native American counted as a “tootin’ Peruvian.”
It’s a jungle out here… I haven’t seen this many middle-aged obese people with poor taste in clothing since Cedar Point.
Back to it.
posted by Brandon on July 21st, 2004 at 2:02 pmThe tootin’ Peruvians are usually found at the NE corner of Fifth Ave. and Liberty, by the cursed restaurant space.
(Well, I don’t know if the restaurant space is really cursed. A Quiznos sub shop did manage to stay open there for nearly 2 years.)
posted by Chris Herdt on July 21st, 2004 at 2:24 pmI loved the bingo, by the way, Chris. I didn’t link to it because I figured everyone saw it already, but it was very neat.
posted by ann arbor is overrated on July 21st, 2004 at 3:02 pmUm. Eric, the “free face massage” is in quotes to denote something hard to convey in print without ruining it.
posted by js on July 21st, 2004 at 3:46 pmThe “free face massage” will be given, most likely, with sweaty palms and consist mostly of an ape-handed dragging and rubbing across the face.
I’m going to see how many terrible “massages” I can give out without being run off.
Of course, if you’d like to be the straight guy for this and pretend to enjoy a terrible face massage while people watch, I’d be happy to coordinate with you.
Heh, I just checked my email… turns out the art school saw fit to email us about the Art Fair. Apparently there are 3 ‘booths’ populated by Art & Design school people. This is enough to merit the exclamation “A&D is well represented!”
Now, I’m not in A2 for the summer, so I can’t really say. But is 3 booths really that much? I had the impression that this was a rather large event.
posted by art student on July 21st, 2004 at 5:10 pmIt took me about 10 years of living in the area before I went to Art Fair. That was on a Saturday and that led to a vow of never again. Although the Art Fair bing might make it fun.
posted by Kozzie on July 21st, 2004 at 6:56 pmI’ll be giving reiki massages so I don’t actually have to touch anyone. $90/hr.
posted by Steve Cherry on July 21st, 2004 at 7:36 pmI’m glad people are enjoying the bingo game. I can’t take the credit/blame, though–the idea was passed on from previous years, and I only drew a fraction of the squares.
Today I spotted $15 parking (on Catherine Street!), Shakey Jake, painful shoes, greasy treats, and art-on-a-stick. I’ll have to try harder tomorrow.
posted by Chris Herdt on July 21st, 2004 at 11:15 pmI saw lots of empty street spots this afternoon on Kingsley near State. Is it because it looks like north Division is completely closed off if you’re not used to driving here?
