Funkplexity

Jason Berry’s letter defending the Blind Pig from accusations of sign-placing doesn’t settle the one question we’ve never been able to answer: how is “Funktell” a reasonable abbreviation of “Funktelligence”?

  1. Leave it to Ann Arbourites to have a raging controversy about fliers. Good grief.

  2. While there aren’t any letters to the editor about it (to my knowledge), Ypsi has just as much of a problem. Only their problem is that they don’t allow any fliering by bands. Period, full stop. And that means that a lot of shows don’t have an opportunity to engage the local community like they could. I realize it’s a minor thing, but that’s something I feel like Ypsi could fix without a lot of work. Put up some corkboards on public buildings, toss in a few kiosks, and let people advertise their shows.

  3. Yeah, I was thinking of asking Ypsi City Hall if they could move that wood kiosk closer to the Mich Ave corner - other than have it in front of the T+A bars *(where they get torn down being used as handles to hold up drunk college students).

But Jason has a point: Between word of mouth and the Web, fliers and print ads are almost useless.

Stupid flier rule anyway I guess.

Also in Ypsi, you can’t have too many “fliers” in the storefronts either -very sanitizing…er Hannitizing.

  4. I actually find out about local shows almost exclusively from fliers. They are a time-honored tradition and I like seeing them around. It would be sad if people stopped putting them up. But maybe I should just be satisfied with Fucked Up + Photocopied.

  5. Damn, somehow my target=”_blank” tag got stripped out! That’s bogus.

  6. The time honored tradition in A2 is that some folks put up the fliers and others take them down.

  7. The only reasonable abbreviation of “Funktelligence” is “crap.”

  8. Leighton,

at the last winter cross-street planning workshop I suggested more kiosks for fliers. Especially on Cross street.

When I explained that a ’sanctioned’ place for these types of fliers would help keep the area clean a bunch of older folks agreed.

I don’t think it would take much effort on our part to make something like this happen in Ypsi.

    The Revolution needs Kiosks.

  9. How much would it cost to get a kiosk, you think? I mean, would there have to be a sidewalk widened or something, or would it just be the cost of the concrete?
It’d be nice to see one over in Depot Town by the Farmer’s Market/Aubree’s platz, and another up on/off of Michigan (maybe in that parking lot on Washington…)
Hell, that’d be a cause that I’d contribute cash to, and I don’t even live in Ypsi.

  10. js has a good idea; definitely the Farmer’s Market, and someplace around EMU.

  11. I am almost certain you could convince some artist, somewhere, to set up flier kiosks as a piece of nominally ’socially conscious art’. Then *the entire community* would be involved, and everyone would feel the flier love.

I may regret this post later, I’ve inhaled rather a lot of marker fumes tonight.

  12. I also like seeing posters and flyers around, a sign of a living community.

  13. Hey Art Student- Any chance you could get a grant to do that?

  14. Me personally? Probably not… my specialty is in scientific illustration, not installation or sculpture.

But it is entirely possible that someone else could.

  15. You could… um… scientifically illustrate um… the process and results of… um… the kiosk going in.
Heh. Maybe the DDA would fund it. I wonder if there are any regulations regarding kiosks in Ypsi…

  16. My fear about a kiosk on Mich Ave is that it’ll be called a “traffic” hazard or some State road violation. If this were Europe (or the “old” Ann Arbor), a kiosk could be right in the middle of the intersection.

I’ll bring it up with some downtown peeps soon. (Tonight at the Henrietta Fahrenheit Party?)

  17. was driving by state and eisenhower, and noticed a Bunch of Funktel posters up for a show a month or two ago. Made me think of this thread.
