Councilmembers Gone Wild

The city may have found the answer to its budget woes - after the new obscenity guidelines for public-access cable take effect, they can release a “Too Hot for CTN” video series. Of course, it might be a little difficult to get anything taken off the air under the new rules - squeamish viewers offended by CTN content will have to fill out a form asking such questions as “Does the program contain images of masturbation? If yes, give a description and an estimate of duration.” We’re just grateful we didn’t arrive in A2 in time to watch 90s CTN offering “Sexy Minutes” (a companion show to Senior Moments?)

  1. “This is a balance between free speech and the city’s right to regulate CTN,” said Council Member Leigh Greden, D-3rd Ward.
Talk about a slippery slope. CTN is financed by tax revenue, isn’t it? So why are “the producers” suddenly deemed First Amendment experts? The whole thing seems a tad puritanical to me.

  2. This would be worth considering if there were every anything interesting on CTN (although it’s probably prompted by complaints about the Naturist’s “Nature Walks”, where naked 40-year-old guy artfully positions botanical specimens over his groin and talks about Queen Anne’s Lace).
    See the new ‘work-here’ ad?
I use my friends real names all the time, but I pity Stinky over there…

  4. anyone remember Safety Girl ?

  5. I do remember Safety Girl. She was the only woman I can recollect who had herself publically whipped by two dominatrices for her birthday television appearance. There was something pure and simple about her show, completely unpretentious. She could have taken that show to the national level, but then maybe the suits would have destroyed it.

  6. (suits would have destroyed it…) Just like Wayne’s World.
Safety Girl was a riot. And made a John Thibeau Current cover as Faye Ray to Blimpy Bear’s King Kong.
The last (maybe only?) time we’ve had dildos on the cover.

  7. Indeed the A2 council’s wimpy and lassez faire decision is the result of Safety Girl.

There’s not enough sex on tv and they’re going to make sure it stays that way. Their lack of enthusiasm is a cleverly disguised bow shot over the public airwaves of CTN

  8. CTN is funded by anyone who pays cable in Ann Arbor. If you pay for cable a pecent of the money goes to the city, the city can do what they want with it, and give some of it to CTN. Ann Arbor has a great history of Public Television, though we could really use a broadcast station of our own! All cities/townships whatever that have a cable company running on thier soil get this money, cant remember whats its called, most places just use it to add to general fund, though some cities use to for community/public TV.

CTN is very heavily user submitted material, at least one whole channel worth, so if you don’t like whats on and live in the city of Ann Arbor, then you can change what the programming is.

Safety Girl, who IMHO didn’t even have a snowballs chance in hell to go national with it was much of the catalyst for how CTN is today. Her show, originally (when it was best) included things like porn movie reviews. She would show short clips of the porn movies and other stuff. Well at some point some ann arbor tight asses (yes they have a right to an ass that tight) decided to try to get her booted off. They didn’t win, but she did tone down her show a bit. It became a simple interview show and the only time it was good then was when 1- the blast off girls were there or 2- T-bone was there, they were such great guests they made the show.

Beyond that she wan’t talanted, and while everyone knew the name of her show around town, there were better shows being produced at the time the got no recognition, basically since they weren’t 100% about sex.

Anyhow, what really happened is a bunch of christians decided they wanted to get rid of her, failed, but did create a new major force in CTN programming, ‘christian programming’, including such greats as one show where they just took a video camera to church, filmed and then played on CTN.

  9. yah, with a little effort you could have AAiO the TV show!

  10. As a recovering addict, I haven’t watched TV in five years, but does Rabbi Goldstein still have a show on CTN? I used to enjoy that one when I needed to chill.
