Well, if my supermarket looks comfortable and modern, carries affordable rather than yuppie-fetish items, is within easy walking/biking distance, and follows sensible design parameters such as placing parking behind the building rather than facing the street, I’m all for it.
posted by Brandon on March 17th, 2004 at 12:50 amI’m with Brandon. The sticking point here is the highly subjective term “aesthetically pleasing.” One man’s “aesthetically pleasing” is another man’s “hideous soulless corporate clone,” a la the Barnes & Noble on Washtenaw in which I won’t spend a penny.
posted by Laura on March 17th, 2004 at 1:33 amI’ve got to say that I generally like Whole Foods. You can buy small quantities of spices (yes, you can also do that at the co-op, whose prices are no lower), you can trust the seafood and the prepared food can be pretty good. It’s not close to anything, but neither is any other grocery store in Ann Arbor.
posted by ann arbor is overrated on March 17th, 2004 at 1:34 amPeople, people– we’re missing the real problem, here. Where are the good bars downtown?
When the place old guys go for a few is a steakhouse on the outskirts, we have a problem.
Also, you’d be hard-pressed to find any sort of supermarket that isn’t part of some “soulless hideous” corporation. The place on the corner of stadium and packard is a very rare exception.
