Stepping Down From Cool

Goodspeed carries the resignation letter of Eugene Chan, his fellow Michigan student on the Cool Cities taskforce. We’re not sure what to make of this one. He cites the committee’s overwhelming focus on economic issues as his reason for leaving - is he passing up an incredible opportunity to influence economic polices that favor wealthy homeowners, or wisely recognizing that he’s being asked for opinions on issues that the group doesn’t have the expertise or the power to affect?

  1. Or does he just think that everyone’s still laughing about the “nicknames” thing? It’s just me, really.

  2. We know he likes the nightlife. But more importantly, does he like to boogie?

  3. He’s quitting? That’s not cool!!

  4. Pop-comment box….. Nice touch, AAIO.

  5. Well…actually I’m not sure if I like the pop-up comment box or not. Here’s the story behind it - there used to be pop-up comment boxes, as is standard with MT, but one day I was playing around with the template and they kind of stopped working. I sort of liked the new style, so I didn’t go back and try to find out how I’d broken them.

Then, weeks later, I was using Internet Explorer (I almost always use Mozilla) and I noticed that there’s this script error when you load the site. I had no idea how that happened, and I didn’t connect it to the broken pop-up at first because it was so long ago. I thought there was some kind of bug in Movable Type or something. With some help from a seasoned web guru, I realized that I’d just deleted a comma in the OpenComments Javascript function.

So, now they work. But does everyone like them, or do you prefer comments on a separate page?

  6. I prefer the pop-up window.

  7. I prefer the pop-up, too… and the error messages were sort of annoying………(I finally turned off the option in IE that allowed me to see errors because I always got one on this page).

  8. Well, somebody let me know if I have the Javascript equivalent of spinach in my teeth again…

  9. I prefer the *not* pop-up box method, though it looks like I’m outnumbered. Anything that opens a new window without me telling it to annoys me–screen clutter and whatnot.

  10. (Sorry — I would have told you but I thought it might be specific to my version of java…).

  11. Javascript, much like a fabled soup, will oft-times fool you…..

  12. Hi all, I think I may be able to offer something here. I am on the Cool Cities Task Force, and I attended the meeting yesterday (Tuesday) at the Brewery. I think you might like some behind-the-scenes information about this whole task force thing.

Well first of all, this task force is a joke. I, of course, don’t know why Eugene left in the first place. He was the only one sitting there not giving much comments anyways. How did he think he would help us out by not talking?

But I concur with him, from my observation, that this task force won’t get anywhere. There have been a consistently-absent member, a professor from the University art school, and all the other task force members are older than 25 (I am too). Most are infact even older than 30. Of two, one works for the city, and he’s a real arrogant. He quickly downplays any suggestions you have that doesn’t coincide with his’. Another is a businessman who works for I forget which company. But all he’s interested is in getting new young employees into his business. He seems like a recruiter.

I will stay in this task force for the upcoming while. Ya, Eugene’s already left. This other girl who just graduated in engineering will leave in March. So there’s two players down already. They’re still looking for a representative from Pfizer. No luck there.

I will provide some other tidbits as more information comes. In the meantime, I will stay anonymous so I can disclose the actual information about this stupid task force.

  13. May we call you Cloak-and-Dagger, or do you prefer Deepthroat?

  14. Hey Anonymous,
I’m starting to work on a story about the task force. Drop me an email.

  15. Iiiinteresting. Very.

Looking very much forward to future dispatches. Shall I leave the flowerpot with the red flag near my eyesore porch couch when I wish to contact you next, or should I expect a notation in the “Connection” section of my Ann Arbor News?

  16. One of the nice features of Moveable Type’s implementation of popup windows is that if you have popups blocked, it just follows the link to the comments in the pre-existing browser window, as usual. Or least that’s how it works in Opera, anyway.

  17. By the way, I’m going to leave the popups, since Murph and I seem to be the only skeptical ones. Thanks for the MT tip, Shmuel.

  18. I don’t like the pop-up window. Having the comments on a separate page was much cleaner looking (I can’t stand that fat little pop-up window).

  19. Hey Anonymous,

What do *you* percieve the function of this taskforce to be?

  20. great spelling, todd. jeez
