Global Friends

Sovok of the Week makes an intriguing comparison between Voronezh activsts of the early 80’s and Ann Arbor “conscientious grad students” of today, drawing from housing ads for co-ops and non-co-op houses. The best one is the two guys seeking “global friends.”

  1. I get a message saying “Sorry, you can’t access this file directly…” when I visit that link.

  2. Thanks for pointing that out - should be all fixed now.

  3. Well, Ann Arbor may have changed in the last ten years, but as one of the earliest members of Black Elk in my undergrad days, I am happy to report that some things haven’t changed one bit.

Incidentally, last time I drove by I noticed that the front lawn still looks like shit. That’s because we decided that, “front lawns are bourgeois, suburban, and obnoxious. Plus, mowing sucks. Therefore we are rototilling ours under and planting wildflowers.” The measure passed unanimously.

    Ah, youth.

  4. Thanks, guys, for giving us coverage. The topic of the article is so huge that one short piece does not do it justice. By the way, look out for this week’s exposé of “Whole Foods”. I think it will go so well with everything this site is about.

  5. Anna, you lived in the oops house? :) Cool. Mowing *does* suck, and black elk does have the triangle park for frisbee-throwing and other grassy activities…

    (double meanings intended.)

  6. We would have used that park more often if we hadn’t been afraid that the frat boys would beat the hell out of us, Crips-style.

  7. Oh — and I just remembered the other motive. We wanted to piss off the cranky woman next door, who somehow accidentally bought her house on frat row instead of in the OFW.
