Another installment in our “chains

Another installment in our “chains are okay as long as they’re upscale boutique chains” series. The new Schakolad store on Washington Street has attracted nothing but positive attention, even though, as the News points out, it’s “the sixteenth franchise in the United States.” The store sells “hand-dipped, European-style truffles and molded chocolates that are made in-store.” Points for the first reader who walks by the store and tells us their slogan, which we can’t recall - something about how “Schakolad” is the sophisticated way to pronounce chocolate.

Not that we want them to do badly - that would just be schakoladenfreude.

  1. I predict that Schlock-olad will do gangbusters business in this town. All the huckleberries in Ann Arbor will fall over backwards to support this new local business. Whoops! I mean, new chain outlet. Move over, Bill Knapps!

  2. Auch das noch! It comes as a surprise that these European-themed businesses are moving into Annarbour?

  3. I been to Europe, been eatin' their chocolate, eaten their liquor-laden ice creams…

Schlockolade is NOT european chocolate. But the fatty “poseurs” in AA won't know the difference. It'll kill.

  4. I walked by there today:
It was “The elegant way to pronounce chocolate is Schockolad.” What do I win? A job that allows me to put my UM BA to use? With benefits and more than $7/hour pay? Thanks. …speaking of which, for the 2nd time in 3 days Borders has called me for an interview (I didn't answer)… they must be desperate for scabs because I was honest about my qualms with corporate bookstores during the job fair mini-interview.

  5. You win mad props and big ups!

  6. The elegant way to pronounce chocolate is Fair Trade Ghanian 83% cocoa dark. I used to be able to get it at PFC, but now neither they or Whole Foods has it. And I know that Shakazulu doesn't either.
